keyboard shortcuts

I am trying to make keyboard shortcuts for common apps such as Software manager or the browser,
I go into Keyboard> shortcut keys and choose Custom, where do I find the commands to insert in the command box? Or do I have to something in the terminal?
Have tried a few times get"execution failed errors.."

That depends on which desktop environment/window manager you are using, a bit of information missing from your question.

Please read this, than add any information you think may be helpful.

Yep, you have to know what command starts which app. You may look them up in menu editor.

Alternatively, you may also look them up in the folder /usr/share/applications/. Each installed app has a .desktop file there. It's a text file, and the line Exec= in that file contains the command to be executed.

E.g. the command for Software Manager is mintinstall.

I have little experience with Cinnamon, but this link might help: https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu...s-on-cinnamon/

I tried a web search for the error message you posted, and nothing came up. Absolutely zilch. As regards that error message, have you looked at the contents of /usr/share/applications/? You could do this either in a file manager or from the command line with the ls command. See man ls for more.

And we were all newbies once. It's nothing to be sorry about. Quite the contrary, welcome aboard!

I should be /usr/bin/mintinstall or just mintinstall, not /usr/share/applications/mintinstall.
