kernel will not allow authentication with bluetooth mouse

I have bluetoothd, hidd, and bluez-simple-agent running. I click my mouse, and bluez-simple-agent never asks to authenticate or for a PIN. Before, bluez was working for me. It broke when I paired my mouse to a LiveCD session of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx.

using bluez 4.71

This is what shows up in syslog:

Code:
Oct  3 20:15:32 lo bluetoothd[10063]: link_key_request (sba=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX, dba=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX)
Oct  3 20:15:32 lo bluetoothd[10063]: src/security.c:link_key_request() kernel auth requirements = 0x04
Oct  3 20:15:32 lo bluetoothd[10063]: src/security.c:link_key_request() link key type = 0x00
Edit: here is what comes back when I enter 'hidd --connect XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX' where XX:XX... = my mouse address
Code:
Can't create HID control channel: Connection refused
And here is hcidump -V
Code:

I do not wish to use bluez-gnome-applet, etc. to try to fix this.
