kernel question

hey guys i just have a question.. this came to my mind when i tried to install linux on my notebook and i needed so link something.. here goes..

i needed i use ndis wrapper to install my wireless card.. and in the instructions it said for me to do this..
ln -s /usr/src/linux-<kernel-version> /lib/modules/VERSION/build

and what i noticed was in the lib/modules/kernelver/build with the pre compiled kernel it has a build folder... but then i did a custom kernel install with a newer kernel... and it didnt have that build folder? anyone know why? iam running debian and i compile my kernel like this... make-kpkg kernel_image

any thoughts?
