Glad to be of help. Here is the line in my fstab for cdrom.
Have mounted as root. If not try that. If it does mount then you need to make mount command usable to you.
Code:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,owner,ro 0 0

hi,

this is a bit odd this...

i have a cd reader (/dev/hdb) & a cd writer (/dev/hdd).

in my fstab, i have /dev/cdrom (reader, /mnt/cdrom) & /dev/hdd (writer, /media/cdrom).

before i recompiled, logged in as a user using gnome i could eject, mount etc... at the click of the mouse. since recompiling i don't seem to have permission to do anything.

when i insert a cdrom, the console behind X spits out...

Code:
manager.c/733: New Device: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/block_Slak10d1
manager.c/769: Changed: /dev/cdrom
mount: only root can mount /dev/cdrom on /mnt/cdrom
I have checked the permissions for the mount command and users are able to execute.

any ideas?

thanks,

norkers

You did good thinking it was a permissions issue. Linux is not bad to understand.
