Kernel 2.6.6 / Gkrellm / lmsensors / Pain in head


Hi all,

Im using the 2.6.6 kernel, on an Asus A7N8X Delux mobo.
Im also using gkrellm v2.

Problem is, i cant get any info on processor temps, theres
just nothing there at all.

Ive made sure that i2c is enabled in the kernel, and all its
options. Including bach and nvidia support. I then downloaded
lm_sensors latest and following their instructions, i did :

make user
make user_install

Rebooted, and still no sensor info to read.

Anyone know what im doing wrong. Or more to the point
is anyone in this situation and has a working howto??

run sensors-detect to see if there are any available sensors for your usage... be sure that you have also done mount sys -t sysfs /sys (mount the /sys area) and have done modprobe i2c-dev... it should make sensors-detect work a lot more smoothly

be aware that many sensors have yet to be ported to kernel 2.6

post the output of what happens in sensors-detect here if you are unsure of someting

Here's the output of sensors-detect :

This program will help you determine which I2C/SMBus modules you need to
load to use lm_sensors most effectively. You need to have i2c and
lm_sensors installed before running this program.
Also, you need to be `root', or at least have access to the /dev/i2c-*
files, for most things.
If you have patched your kernel and have some drivers built in, you can
safely answer NO if asked to load some modules. In this case, things may
seem a bit confusing, but they will still work.

It is generally safe and recommended to accept the default answers to all
questions, unless you know what you're doing.

We can start with probing for (PCI) I2C or SMBus adapters.
You do not need any special privileges for this.

As you can see i don't seem to have the modules there to load. I only did a make user and make user_instaill for lm_sensors. Not sure what this does but it's what the README file said to do for a 2.6 kernel.

I've enabled ic2 as built into the kernel as follows :

I've not seen anything to do with lm_sensors so hence i did the user space install (Whatever that means, explanation would be good).

As a last ditch attempt, i looked at another of my linux boxes at work, which also runs gkrellm 2 and this one picks up the sensor data. Different board, it's an EPOX. I've looked into the kernel i compiled there, and there's NO ic2 support built in???????? I don't run any modules on that one either, so i'm totally lost now.

Hope you can help, this is becoming a quest !!!

Edit : Oh yeah , i tried the mount command, and when i key it in as follows :

mount sys -t sysfs /sys

it gives me an error , and a man page to read. Did i key it in incorrectly??? Should i have modified it ?? Never had a need to do this before, so again, i'm stumped as to what it does.

OK forget that...... I've now got sensors working, kind of !!!

b) what does the mount sys command do??? do i need to do this at boot time????? if so i'm asuming i do it in fstab how?

c) Looking at my above data, what temp is my processor running at???? For the life of me i can't tell.

d) Why the hell is gkrellm still NOT picking up sensor data (i've restarted it),

I love linux, but i don't think it loves me sometimes !

okay, glad to see you've got it working

first, for kernel, next time it is a good idea to make everything in the i2c section a module; don't pick and choose and it won't enlarge your kernel anyway

the kernel doesn't contain anything that states "lmsensors"; everything is in the i2c section since lmsensors for kernel 2.6 has work done directly into the kernel tree, whereas 2.4 kernels need the outside modules

the make user install installs the user-space tools, like sensors-detect, sensors, isa-dump, fancontrol, pwmconfig, etc... for 2.4 kernels, you would have had to do make all, which would not only build the user-space tools, but the sensors modules as well since the native one in 2.4 kernels is broken and out of date

first, i was mistaken (a bit) on the sys mount command.... oops
first, make sure you actually have a /sys dir by doing mkdir /sys
then do mount sysfs -t sysfs /sys
you should add an fstab entry like so: (yes, you need to have this loaded at boot-time)
syfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0

sysfs is a virtual filesystem (like proc) that gives information about what the kernel knows about various hardware and chipsets in your computer; if you browse it, you will see that it changes when you plugin something to usb, and contains a lot of low-level information (such as about block devices)... this is intended to allow programs communicate with hardware more easily and is essential with the new udev system coming about (to replace devfs)

as for which one is your cpu temp, i don't know; for me, i ran a blowdryer across my cpu to see which was affected the most and also just did some long compiling to see which temperature rose the most; that would be your cpu temp (i recommend just compiling MPlayer and watch the temperatures with sensors)
my guess is that 37 degrees is the cpu temp, it seems realistic (25 seems too low)

also, did you do sensors -s before looking at this output? this command will set some configuration options that can often affect what the sensors output is; the sensors-detect recommends doing sensors -s

as for why gkrellm isn't displaying anything, make sure you have sysfs mounted; then i need to know what the output of lsmod gives (i believe gkrellm requires i2c-dev being loaded);
sometimes it is hard to see that gkrellm is detecting the sensors... if there is an arrow next to fans, voltages, and temps, just open those arrows (it took me a while to notice them)

Ok, thanks for all that, its helped....

I did indeed run sensors -s

I´ll keep going, itś not beating me that easily..

The output of lsmod only lists my nvidia driver, as i said, ive not used modules
since the 2.6 kernels first came out. I do remember somthing on the IC2 homepage
that refered to building IC2 as modules for best effect, i´ll maybee do a recompile later.

Im pretty sure that the Asus A7n8x uses the bach chipset. And it seems ok, as i get
output from sensors, as youve seen.

Don´t know about gkrellm at the moment. Like i said, my other box works ok with cpu
temps, and its configured more or less the same, no modules and no IC2 in the kernel.
The only difference is the epox motherboard. So again itś down to why the hell is it working on one box and not on another, gkrellm obviously isńt using lmsensors, IC2 or the mount sys.
It cant be, as this is the first time ive ever had to use it. And none of it is enabled on my other box.... WEIRD !!!!

does your other box run a 2.6 kernel? are the drivers for that kernel built as modules or are they built into the kernel?

so you have sysfs mounted.... and gkrellm still won't show anything? gkrellm queries (afaik) sensors and/or the proc entries in /proc/sys/dev/sensors/chipname

make sure you have proc mounted (it should be by default)

what is the output of lsmod?

you may just want to go ahead and recompile your kernel; it shouldn't be hard if you still have your config; just enable everyting in i2c as modules

rerun sensors-detect so it can load the necessary modules

Yes the other box is also 2.6.6, and no i´ve not compiled ic2 into the kernel on that one,
in fact, ive not even set it as a module... I´d never heard of it untill a couple of days ago, so it remained unchecked. sysfs is NOT mounted on that box either, as again, i´ve only just heard of it.

This is what´s confusing me !!!!!

Proc is mounted by default on both boxes.

Output of lsmod is as follows :

oops, sorry, didn't see that in your last post...

but now i'm confused.... how is sensors working without any modules? zounds! something is amiss! sensors can't query anything without the i2c modules, what is going on?

btw, sysfs is compiled into the kernel by default.... if fact, there isn't a way to disable that feature, so it is present in every 2.6 kernel

do you have any idea how you got sensors to give output? what steps did you take?

i am going to recommend a kernel recompile at this point; enable everything as modules in i2c, but do not build the i2c debugging

Following that thread, does not helped me getting sensors to work. Here's what I've done, let's hope somebody can point me to the right direction.
I'm running FC2 with custom kernel 2.6.6 with all ic2 modules. I have also a /sys partition, so first i did "sensors-detect" with this result:

from that list it gives you at the end, modprobe all those modules

make sure i2c-dev and i2c-isa are also loaded

then run sensors -s, and sensors should give some info

Hehehe i told you it was flipping my head out... My other box does NOT have i2c installed at all. All i did was make a custom kernel, selecting my usual setup, ie, processor type, board chipsets, nic drivers, etc ... And then fired up gkrellm2 and selected options > Sensors, and added the cpu temps to the monitor. LOL I know it's weird, that's why i said earlier that gkrellm can't be using ic2, it's not running on the other box, nor is lm_sensors. I only started to look into all this after my second box failed to show me any temps... I google'd for linux sensor temp and up popped lm_sensors. The rest you know. If it helps here's the .config file from my other box with working sensor data :
