Did you notice any errors relating to es1371 when:
1.) you did make xconfig
2.) you did make bzImage
3.) you did make modules
4.) you did make modules_install
5.) while booting the kernel
6.) while loading modules
?

If you find error messages relating to the module, try compiling es1371 into the kernel. If there's still a problem, check for errors dealing with OSS and ALSA
