Are you creating an audio CD or Data CD?
For MP3 you need to start a Data CD.

I know i have to do a data cd but i want to make an audio cd that plays in a normal cd player so that way i don't have to transfer it to my windows machine and re burn it just to be able to use it in my car.

Standard automobile CD players are not going to recognize a data CD containing mp3 files. If you want your car's player to be able to play a CD that you've burned, you'll need to burn your tunes as wav files. There are various utilities that contain a conversion function, personally I like Audacity.

Overall, you will need to convert your mp3's to wav files, then burn them as an audio CD.

K3b will convert the mp3s on the fly when burning audio CDs, just choose the audio CD option then drag and drop the mp3 files when you see the audio is nearly full in the size bar use the burn button.
