i know i have seen this problem on my uncles machine also, and although we didn't figure out what the problem was, i know what did work was, putting the data cd into the burner selecting cd to cd copy, and it makes an image of the cd and puts it in a tmp directory, and then when its done it ejects the cd and tells you to insert a blank one to continue the process and burn the other copy...give that a try and see if it works.
