JRE error

I downloaded the jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.bin self installer. I installed it but am still not able to view the java applets in any of my browsers. I had downloaded it in my home folder and it got installed there itself in folder jre1.5.0_01. I want to ask why am not able to see the spplets? Was something wrong in installation or is there some specific location where I should install it. I saw the control panel of JRE, but there was nothing that I needed to configure.

This should help, I guessing your path is not established.

Try
echo $JAVA_HOME
echo $PATH
