Im pretty new to linux, still trying to figure just about everything out... but this has been bugging me. Im taking an online class and it requires that you go into a live chat with the professor every few days to talk to him but the chatroom requires java and no matter what I try, I cant seem to get it installed.
Im on a rh 9.0 installation with minor upgrades via up2date. Can someone please explain how I can install it?
Ive tried looking for the jvm file ... I tried to get it off cd's, tried to download it off of blackdown.org and java.sun.com but I cant figure out how to install the files.
clicking under downloads Java VM
selecting manual download,
download the RPM version
there's instructions there for installing it but here they are anyway cut and pasted:
Launch the installation script by using the following commands from the directory in which it is located:
./j2re-1_4_1_<version number>-linux-i586-rpm.bin The script displays a binary license agreement, which you are asked to agree to before installation can proceed. Once you have agreed to the license, the install script creates the file j2re-1_4_1_<version number>-linux-i586.rpm in the current directory.
3. Become root by running the su command and entering the super-user password.
4. Run the rpm command to install the packages:
The following command installs the packages comprising the Java 2 Runtime Environment.
do "locate libjavaplugin_oji.so" to find out where it's installed (you could try this first before anything to see if you've already installed it)
ln -s /<complete path to java vm plugin directory>/libjavaplugin_oji.so
Their possibly might be two directories in the java vm plugin directory ns610 and ns610-gcc32, one of them should contain a libjavaplugin_oji.so that will work with your browser.
