i tried to install the java plugin for mozilla through the browser and it gave me a little box to type in my root pass into but the thing is that it only allow a certain number of chars and my root pass is to long...
are there any other ways to install the java plugin
Sure! Find your java install directory:
whereis java
And then, in there you should find a plugins directory. You should copy the .so file (in the ns6 or higher, ns6 stands for netscape6, netscape plugins are compatible with mozilla..) from the correct directory to your mozilla plugins directory, which is likely:
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
But can be found with:
whereis mozilla
After you are all done, open up a browser and type in the url:
about:plugins
And see if it's now listed, and properly (not a bunch of ???? throughout the plugin listing).
I just tried what you suggested as it seemed the easiest and more obvious way to address my problem (I have been running RH9 for nearly a week now - the first five days was trying to configure my modem - easy suits me best right now).
Ta-da! I check the about plugins link in my browser and there's a lovely long list of Java types enabled. Great.
I click to the page I have been trying to load (internet banking - there used to be a cyan puzzle piece where there should've been an applet), and Mozilla disappears.
Nailed it! I've spent hours today trying to fathom it but there at last.
Searching high and low, through fora, URLs, google etc., trying everybody's different ideas for solving the prob with java function.
If you are still trying to sort this, then look here
and scroll down page to java section. I am a week old n00b to RH & Linux, so complicated command lines and esoteric suggestions were a real bamboozler to me. This cuts to the chase. If you can understand how and where to download and unpackage stuff, then this article will tell you, in very clear instruction, how to create a 'link' which allows the browser software to see the plugin.
