I don't know anything about PCLinuxOS, but on most modern distributions, there's no kernel patching involved for autofs. There are usually pre-built packages for automount and a pre-built kernel module for autofs.

Why does ivman wiki specify pmount if ivman does the automounting?
|
Because ivman has to call an external program to do the mounting and pmount allows a regular user to mount a device that does not appear in fstab. You could use regular old mount, but it doesn't have the same flexibility.

When tring to install pmount "make" says missing libdbus-1.so.0 is in /lib?

Sounds like you might need to install D-BUS.

why can't udev do auto mounting?

It can, it's just a pain in the neck to set up and isn't as flexible as the D-BUS/HAL/volume manager combination.
