is there a program that can send faxes to another fax machine

we're throwing away a fax machine we have been using for a while but now we want to know if we can use the computer to send faxes over an internet connection of a telephone connection (it doesn't matter we're willing to hook them up to both) is there freeware that can send like an openoffice text document to a fax machine or a pdf. and is there a way to recieve faxes by having the computer recieve them and making the printer print it

thanks for the help

i already did but i don't know how to get it running

plus i have found out that linux comes with its own command
Code:
fax help

fax make [-l] file

fax send [-l] [-v] { -m | number } filename...

fax [ receive [-v] [ filename-prefix ] ]

fax { print | view | rm } filename...

fax { queue | status [t] | start | stop }

fax answer

Options

-l
use low (96 line per inch) resolution

-v

display verbose messages for debugging

-m

the phone call has already been dialed manually

The commands make, send, receive, view and queue may be abbreviated to their first characters (e.g. ''fax q'').
Assignments of the form VARIABLE=value may appear before the command name to temporarily change the values of most fax script variables (e.g. ''fax PAGE=A4 print letter.001'')
but i don't know for sure if it will send stuff like openoffice documents, pdf files and txt files the page doesn't give enough information on that stuff, plus how do you recieve faxes, do i need to have the phone line plugged into the machine and what is going to notify me when i recieve one

http://linux.die.net/man/1/fax

plus i want to do it over the internet and not a phone line since my mother want to be able to do it from her laptop

AFAIK you need a dialup modem.
faxes travel on the pstn, not the adsl
network.
There are however use an online fax service, which will cost you.

then its better to use a fax program that uses a dialup modem it won't cost me a penny like you said so i think i will go with the fax program efax but how do i recieve them, is efax running in the background and a notification would come up in some form and ask me to confirm the fax so it will print, or does it not work that way

Hello baronobeefdip,

once I've configured my Linuxmachine for Fax.
But it was my old computer which still had a serial port. I got a faxmodem from Ebay which was really cheap (about 10 Euro).
As repo stated you need a (analog) telephone connection and the hylafax program.

I've configured this some years ago out of curiosity and have used it only one time for testing, but it worked.

Markus
