Installations....where do the files go??

Probley a fairly dumb question but I'll ask anyway. Often I install something and yet have no idea where the files are installed. Therefore I cannot find the bin files to start the program with, or the documentation to find how to use the new program. What is the way to find them, or maybe I'm too dumb and should stay with windoze, (but I don't want to do that!!). Any help would be great.....
