It was a poor decision on cannonical's part to market these *buntu "variants," because they've caused much confusion.
Ubuntu should be pronounced with a g, to meet the convention. That is, Ubuntu is really Gubuntu = GNOME + Ubuntu.
Kubuntu = KDE + Ubuntu
Xubuntu = XFCE + Ubuntu.
My point is that Xubuntu is Ubuntu with a light weight desktop. GNOME (default for "Ubuntu") will run horribly on your system.
ok i understand as of right now i am downloading xubuntu it is curruntly 15% done! god i need a cig lol but yea so the xubuntu (GNOME) should run the same as ubuntu 8.10 desktop? i was just now informed that i wiped out my old comp. and its a 600 it has no operating system on it at all and it doesn't register a hard drive so hes going to get it onto the table and replace the harddrive cuz its dead! it'll be with a 10 gig with a 256 that should run Ubuntu 8.10 perfectly right?
Oh okay, a 600 isn't so bad! But 256 for memory is still pretty low, so Xubuntu is indeed the way to go. Xubuntu doesn't run GNOME - it runs XFCE, which a much less intensive desktop environment. It's not quite as full featured, but it's better to run less at a tolerable speed than more at a snail's pace, imho.
