The Ethernet connection may be marked as not managed by Network Manager, so that could be why it is not seeing it.

I also used to use wicd until pyhton2 support was removed. There are security reasons for it being deprecated. The wicd developers are working on a new version with python3 that is in Debian experimental called python3-wicd.

I followed some of the instructions there and now Network Manager can see the Ethernet connection.

But it's still dead. When I try to connect, the app tries and tries and tries and eventually times out.

Why? Because it doesn't support a password for Ethernet.

If I understand well you need to use password for your modem, not for your ethernet. what kind of modem is it?

Is everything on the "802.1X security" tab in your Ethernet connection settings still grayed out?

- Yes
Under the Security tab for my wired ethernet connection there is a little toggle button that says "802.1x Security". It needs to be toggled to ON (and for my desktop this turns it from grey to blue.)
Then Authentication, Username and Password become un-greyed and I am able to set them.
Except my ethernet doesn't need these.

Noticed this thread shortly after posting in another thread here that systemd comes with systemd-networkd as a straightforward option that I've converted several tens of installations over to, including all my Bookworms and Trixies.
Code:
# inxi -S
System:
  Host: ab85m Kernel: 6.1.0-10-amd64 arch: x86_64 bits: 64 Console: pty pts/0
    Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm)
# systemctl list-unit-files | grep net
networking.service disabled enabled
systemd-network-generator.service disabled enabled
systemd-networkd-wait-online.service disabled disabled
systemd-networkd-wait-online@.service disabled enabled
systemd-networkd.service disabled enabled
systemd-networkd.socket enabled enabled
network-online.target static -
