Question Howto set display to standby manually?

Hi!
I'm searching for a method to set my tft display to standby via disabling output on my graphics card.
I'm using Ubuntu Feisty an also on every other distribution I think it's possible to set the monitor to standby if it is not used.
But I want to manually do this and switching back to active via a keystroke or an ssh command maybe.
Can you imagine a solution to this?
I think since it can automatically be done via a timeout for energy saving purposes there has to be a way to do this manually.

Similar question for notebooks:
This standby thing via just deactivating graphics output will work for a normal PC. On a notebook the backlight has to be turned off. Is there also a way to do this manually via command line and not with the Fn Keys an my keyboard?

You should research the xset command.
Something like:
Code:
$ xset dpms force off
May turn off your display.

Gentoo has a nice wiki related to this (including some sample scripts for laptops):

Good luck!
