how to startup in GUI mode

I have RH 8.0 installed on two PC. One automatically starts up in GUI mode, but the other starts in command line mode and I must manually do "startx". Where should I look in the one that works to see what to copy to the one that doesn't?

Use startx to get into a GUI in the one that currently goes into console mode

then go to a shell and type

gedit /etc/inittab

change this line

id:3:initdefault:

to

id:5:initdefault:

ie change it to run level 5

Then save it.

When you re-boot it will boot straight into GUI mode

the file should be in /etc/ and i think should be called inittab
you only need to change one line of it, a three means console and a five means X Window mode.

To change the runlevel while the PC is still on, type in "init x" where x is the runlevel you want. This is generally better than typing "startx" if your services are essentially the same in both modes, because it enables the graphical logon screen as well.
