Can someone tell me which way of working in linux is better either the Text mode or Gui ? Most of my friends advice me to work in text mode, Do text mode has any advantage over GUI?

You can pipe commands into other commands, i.e. the output of one command becomes the input of another. If you are a fast typist the CLI is usually quicker.

I try to do all my configuring from the command-line, because most distros will have the same commands. GUIs have a bunch of different controls, depending on the GUI and the distro. If I need to work on a different system, I should be able to do it.

Having said that, I spend most of my time in KDE. Mozilla, OpenOffice, and most of the other programs I use won't run without X.

I absolutely will not boot to X, though. Too many things can go wrong and you'll have to workaround to login to fix them. All that can be averted with a simple startx.

i like to use a combination of both. i use several workspaces in blackbox and one is dedicated to system admin which i have aterm constantly running. i use this to cp files or test my code or what ever and this way i can easily move from writing code and testing it with a move of the mouse.

combination of both is the best idea some programs are faster to use under cli but other are faster to use with a gui and for some of them you definitly need a x system.

it depends

if your workign on a server (web/db/mail) .. there is absolutely no need for a GUI, text mode will do anythign just fine, and you dont
need X installed on the machine

now for a workstation ..

that is true CRego3D. i use a linux at work for a server and all i have to do is to get in using putty and twiddle around. unfortunately when i was taught to use that puter, i was taught to use Webmin. now if i need to do any admin then i feel more comfortable using webmin. but at home i use my linux for workstation/desktop/soon-to-be-server. well a server only for my intranet. plus the fact that i run an anti-spam service for family on that box. (aaahhhhh.... multi-tasking at its best) so i like that idea of using both gui and cli

True, but what I like of scripts liek webmin is the fact you do not need X to be running in order to use them, just access it from your regular desktop workstation

I never install X in none of my servers, every little bit of resources I can save the best (heck, mysql will chew them up later .. hehe)

Now, on my personal workstation, I have RH 8.0 running KDE 3.1, while I love my X, I still find myself allways having a Terminal window open, I just can't get away from that command prompt
