it was easy wasn't it? I really don't see how people manage to get so lost sometimes!

download mplayer and play dat files dont forget to download skin for that

as another option, if you want the rpm files, you can see which ones to get on my guide on the red hat 9 page.

Source installation of Mplayer on Redhat 9 is perfectly OK. Not a single problem at all.
But there is a problem rpm installation.
So try to install it from source, it should be fine.
