How to Open Ports?

Hi,

I have a linksys router. When I go the configuration page, and forward ports, the shield probe on (http://www.grc.com/) changes from 'stealth' to 'closed,' which I'm told means the ports are forwarded, but 'inactive'.

So my question is, how do I make them active?

-thanks

I must admit that these port scan sites do not seem 100% reliable I compared several against my smoothwall recently, like pcflank, sygate, grc, etc and they all give different results. Some say I'm stealthed, some say closed, etc...

Anyway, more to the question. Okay, so you fowarded the ports, so they now show up as closed. They will only show as open if you have an app that's actually using the port... ie you open port 3646 or whatever for p2p... You then need to run the p2p software and configure it to listen on port 3646. The port will then show as open and active

Ahhhhhh...I see, lol I thought that meant the ports couldn't be used. Thanks for clearing that up.
