How To Make FTP UP in RedHat 9.0

Hai .

Iam a Linux NewBie and ive successfully installed RedHat 9.0 in my machine.I would like to host this machine in the internet and i require FTP service.will FTP be enabled automatically or should i install vsftp package.I want to check whether FTP is up bfr taking my machine to my Internet Service Provider.

Looking forward for all valuable suggestions

you have to be shure that the package is installed, if not, load a rpm for rh9 and install it like this:

rpm -i pakage.rpm

then you have to configure the firewall, and allow the ports you like for your ftp.

after that be shure the ftp server is running (/etc/init.d/proftpd restart - if you have proftpd installed....

please give more information when you post something.. for example: is it installed? firewall problems? etc.....

Actualyy i havnt done anything other than simple installation.While installation ive given furewall configuration as MEDIUM. and i ve checked the FTP option in that screen.So that alone wont work right??.Is package required for FTP is pre installed with RH9 ..How can i check that..By fire wall did u mean ipchains or anything like that.

the firewall configuration from rehdat should work.. so if you checked the ftp button, the firewall should be ok!

now, how to know if you have an ftp server installed?

try with
rpm -q ftp

there you should become something like:
ftp.version.bla.bla
proftpd bla bla
or
ftpd bla bla

ftp is only an ftp program. the ftp server is called ftpd or proftpd

i use proftpd, but i'v heard that vsftpd is very good as well.

Thanku thanks a lot for the reply it works fine now.
Actually vsftpd is preinstalled i think.when i gave service vsftpd status command it shows running...
So i believe its up now and i don't have to do anything else with that..
