So, this still doesn't have any Modeline in output. Seems you didn't understand what I'm talking about: I'm looking for information like this:
Code:
Modeline "1280x1024_60.00" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync

Hmmm, the only place I know of that info is here
Code:
grep Modeline /var/log/Xorg.0.log
The last one is the one you're running. But if you change size (Ctrl_Alt_+/-), that's wrong.

There is also a video mode, a hex number buried deep in software and something I know nothing about passed from driver to video card and describing each mode. Think of your "vga=791" line on lilo.conf. I hit them this way: Linux would not install on a particular box, and it was graphics. I discovered that there was an understanding or standard that 16 basic modes would be available in all video cards. My video at the time was an early SiS 6326, and it didn't have them.

Well, this one
Code:
grep Modeline /var/log/Xorg.0.log
gives only those modes detected when the server starts, but not the ones added afterwards.

And this one is just a number of video mode passed to VGA BIOS by linux. It's just a mode describing WxHxdepth, defined in VBE.

I hoped there were a way to get the modeline from X server just as easily as we pass new ones via XRandr...

We haven't got the whole story there.

What's missing is the refresh rate, H x V and all overscan details. Are you sure there isn't more in those video modes? I seem to remember vesa having several "1024x768" modes, starting at 43Hz interlaced and going right up. I'd mark this solved, (to end it) & take this query to phoronix.com forums where a few graphics developers hang out.
