In Thunderbird, click on the attachment (or, if there are multiple attachments, in the clear space to the right of the attachments) and either open them and then save them where you want or right click on them and use "Save as" to save them directly where you want.

I have been lucky enough until recently to have two monitors to work with but as I'm sure you'll find out it works on one monitor using Alt+Tab to switch between windows.
I would agree that Dolphin, or another file manager, is probably going to be easier for you to use than the terminal as it gives visual information regarding the location of files.

Right, I can save the attachments as catkin has suggested and I shall play with two windows as does 273, now.

I have enough to be going on with for a month or two so I'll close this thread until something else comes up. I'm sure it will.
