How to check English spell within a Chinese environment

Each time I run "spell" on an English text file, an error show up:

Error: No word lists can be found for the language "zh_CN".

It seems that the "spell" wants to check the Chinese spell for the file.
How can I check the English spell within a Chinese desktop environment?
