how do i install network-manager and start using it instead of wicd

for me wicd isn't really working out and the linux distro (ubuntu and debian based) that i downloaded and installed had wicd pre-installed and ready for use but up to now i don't like it so i want to know how to install and start using network-manager-gnome because last time i installed it from the repositories and restarted and never saw the applet on the top panel so is there something else that i should do before i start going crazy because i can't seem to figure out how to get the applet going and start using it

network manager startup

In ubuntu version 11.10 network manager is the default and I did no extra configuration.

In Slackware you must do the follwing to start the network manager applet pkg.

To start NTM enter this in etc/rc.d/rc.local

# Start NetworkManager:
if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.networkmanager ]; then
sh /etc/rc.d/rc.networkmanager start
fi

Hope this is of some help.

Please, at the very least, use punctuation in your posts. Entire paragraphs like this that contain no punctuation are very difficult to read, as they just look like one long sentence.
