Try installing it using apt-get and it will tell you if you have the latest version installed.

yes, if you want to find a specific package, use grep instead of less. dpkg-query -l | grep gnome will show you all installesd packages with 'gnome' in their name.
You can of course just use aptitude, like I do Just type 'aptitude'. with <shift>+7 you can search for packages.

There are also graphical tools for that (synaptics for gnome and adept for kde) but I like aptitude better. I only use the adept-notifier to inform me about available updates and then install with aptitude.

I use Synaptic - it gives an accounting of everything installed.

For debian based systems, I think that this will help to find what packages are installed from the command line:

dpkg-query -l <package name> | grep ii

Does anyone know how to get the same info using aptitude from the command line. I have read this site however I just can't seem to make heads or tails of it.
