How do I find out drive type?

I want to mount a drive partition (eg /dev/hdb4) but I don't know its type. How do I find this?

I should know of course, because I partitioned it myself but that was months ago and I am at that age when I forget faster than I learn:-)

Thanks, Rob

Many thanks - it gave "system" as Linux; I found I can use mount -t auto which seems to work
