How do I create system restore points similar to XP.

Being a newbie to linux I am wondering how I can create restore points in FC4 so that if I do something to the system that buggers it up I can go back to when the system was working fine.

Perhaps I could create some kind of image files that I can store as backups on my HDs.

So far I haev not done anything to damage my linux machine but I would hate to have to reinstall everything from scratch if I did.

You can use the dd tool. It's not newbie-friendly, but very usefull.

Mount the partitions you want to copy read-only and run something like: dd if=/dev/hda6 of=/mounted/folder or dd if=/dev/hd[x][y] | gzip > /path/to/image.gz

Explore and test the command extensively before you run this inside your working system. It's very powerful onces you get the hang of it.

Otherwise try: http://mkcdrec.ota.be/project/index.html

I've seen people check the /etc directory into cvs
again not exactly a newbie-friendly solution
