How do I add fonts to my system?

How do I add them so they show up and I can use them in GIMP?

Also, what are some good sites to download fonts from?

Thanks.

~/.fonts is the easiest place to put them. If the folder doesn't exist, create it. External sites don't usually have good quality free fonts. Many are not even legal. If they are freely redistributable and of good quality, your distribution repositories probably has them.

Gimp has a fonts/ directory for extras :
/home/<username>/.gimp-2.X/fonts/

May be a better place, if you add fonts,
which can disturb other applications :

Well, you'll find good font sites fairly easily, but you won't find good fonts as easily. 90+% of the freely available fonts are crap, so you will spend a lot of time looking through, err, less good fonts, to find any good ones.

You might like to start a new thread along the lines of "What are your favourite fonts". I'm sure many people would like to share their experiences.
