Help with installing software

Now that I've finally managed to get my speedtouch 330 modem to work I intend to ditch xp except for games, so I need some help about how to instal software correctly. In windows its no probs cos I understand the file system but I'm lost in Suse Linux. I'd like to create a folder (e.g. software) in which to put stuff but where in the file system should it go and when I've installed something, how do create a shortcut to it in the start menu/panel ?
Now I know that this is basic stuff but I'm almost totally new to Linux (mind you installing the speedtouch has ensured that I've learnt a fair bit in a very short time, lol)
I'll be grateful for any help, thanks.

Ok... as you are already know, the Linux file system layout is very much different from that of windows.

I recommend reading the Linux Filesystem Hierarchy HowTo for information on how things are traditionally done under linux.

Then once you've done that feel free to ask any questions to fill in any blanks you may have.

thanks, I'll check that out - I'm busy going thru 'howtos' right now, it's hard to take it all in but it's a damn sight more interesting than just clicking buttons in xp. You get a sense of achievement when, finally, something works and you've learnt a new skill.
Thanks again - no doubt I'll be back soon (lol)
