help with installing samba

i'm done with all the install but now it tells me this:

Starting the Daemons Manually
If you're in a hurry, you can start the Samba daemons by hand. As root, simply enter the following commands:

# /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
# /usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd -D

Samba will now be running on your system and is ready to accept connections. However, keep in mind that if either of the daemons exit for any reason (including system reboots), they will need to be restarted manually.

the problem is, is that i don't have smbd or nmbd in that directory....and typeing "locate smbd" and "locate nmbd" does now show anything....help please

In Linux, you can use smbclient in order to connect to another computer on your network.
Code:
smbclient //ComputerName/shareName -U username
Or, if you are using KDE, you can use Konqueror. In the location bar, use the following syntax:
Code:
smb://ComputerName/shareName

ok so here is what i type.........

./findsmb

here is what i see.......

10.1.18.164 BAPMAS156 CP_MASON [Windows 5.1] Windows 2000 LAN MANAGER

i want to connect to that computer, i know the username and password on that computer b/c as i said before it's mine.......

so here is what i type......

./smbclient -U amweiden -L BAPMAS156

it then says:

password:

one i type my password it says this:

NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE........

i believe i need to change something in that config file because all i have in there right now is this........

[global]
workgroup = CP_MASON
encrypt passwords = yes
[test]
comment = for testing only
path = /usr/local/samba/tmp
read only = no
guest ok = yes

does something need to be changed in here or what.

Unless I misunderstood your post, BAPMAS156 is a windows2000 computer.
You do NOT need to edit the Samba configuration file (/etc/samba/smb.conf) in order to access a Windows 2000 system.
You only need smbclient. And you must set up file sharing and the permission on windows2000.
