Before having a try, should I delete my old partition (5G) and let it unformatted to install linux? Does linux support HD which size larger than 8G?

Yes, delete the 5GB partition and allow rh7.1 to partition it for you. This here is the link for the red hat 7.1 installation guide. If you don't have any documentation, this should help. Good luck.

Question

Will it harm my old system if I intall linux as server class?

According to the red hat 7.1 installation guide, a workstation install with either Gnome or KDE takes 1.2GB. If you install both, it takes 1.5GB. The guide says the workstation install is best if you're wanting to try linux. It also needs some space for a swap partition. That usually is figured to be twice the size of your ram. So, I'd try the workstation install. 5GB should be enough to try it out.
DO NOT install the server configuration. It could wipe out the win98. Also, the server install doesn't have the nice GUI displays.
