Harddrive error while installing

:newbie:

It occurrs the following error while I am installing the RedHat 7.1:

Anerror occurred reading the partition table for the block device hda. The error was:
No such file or directory!

Can anyone tell me why and how to fix it?

when does it give this error during the install? like after you create partitions, installing the packages...etc...? What kind of install are you performing, desktop, server or custom?

Question 1 -
Did you have anything other operating system installed before ? Like win 2000 ?

Question 2 -
Does automatic partitioning fail ? Did you try to use fdisk or Disk Druid manually ?

Possiblity:
Incompatible Hard Disk.
What type are you using, how big is it, etc.

Harddrive error while installing

:newbie:

(1) I have had win98 installed in that HD;

(2) The error occurred before the automatic partitioning
window popup;

(3) My harddisk is IBM 30G

DoubleLetter 08-29-2001 09:52 AM

Ah; Win 98.

Ok, now did your hard disk have partitions ?

If not, then you better Read the Red Hat Manual Installation manual on how to install two os in the same partition. In fact, I'd not recommend doing that... especially when you're installing a workstation.

If yes, then what is the size of each partition ?

:newbie:

There are four partitions in my hard disk.
10G, 10G, 5G, 5G for each one separately.

Oooh,

A Workstation needs a lot more than that to be comfortable.

By the way, you mentioned, in another thread, that you've already installed RH 7.1 ????

No. I install it in another old harddisk.

I'm not sure, but, as DoubleLetter said, I don't think you want to do an automatic partition if you have another OS already installed. The workstation install needs to see an existing Linux partition for the automatic partitioning to work. If all of your partitions are FAT32 (Windows) format, the installer can't touch them. You can try the manual partition, and if that doesn't work, do a custom install.

I can't access to the manual partition window. After the system
report that error message, it restart itself.

DoubleLetter 08-29-2001 11:33 PM

So you have two hard disks set up, one as a slave ???

Can you explain how you're os are installed, so we could understand the problem....

Cheers..

I have a 30G hard disk of ibm. There are 4 partitions in my hard disk : 10G 10G 5G 5G. I have installed the win98 into the first partition. and i want to install linux into the last partition.
I boot from cdrom to install the linux. After the system check everything , it pop up a window to select the keybord type, mouse type, and then ask you what do you want the linux to install as - I select Workstation. After click the next button, the system report the error mentioned above and reboot itself.

Ok, %Gb is TOO less for a Linux Workstation.

Ok, for now, try Server-Class.

Then tell us what it says. Though 5gb is still TOO less for SErver-class.

Are these primary partitions? Linux needs two partitions to install. One for root and one for the swap partition.
