GXine complains about device permissions then exits

Hello, after countless hours I finally got slack to a point halfway working, however I am having a problem with gxine. When started, it asks to run some setup wizards, then it checks for my cdrom/dvd drive. However, these checks fail and it says "FAILED - /dev/cdrom permissions are not sufficient," and tells me to create a symlink /dev/cdrom pointing at my cd drive. Now, I already have a symlink there, created by udev. It's group is cdrom, which I have added myself to, and it gives group read write privelidges. Why can't it see it? This is more than totem does, it just shows the gui for 1 second and then exits. I am able to mount and read a data cd fine from nautilus. I am running gnome 2.6 on slack 10 with gxine 3.3. Some help would be greatly appreciated!

Update: Now GXine does the same thing as totem, starts and shows the GUI of a second then exits. I tried running both from a terminal emulator and they exit with an X error, 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
