gnome2 session and VNC

I am having trouble connecting to a clients linux pc using vnc and his desktop is gnome2. I have used

unset SESSION_MANAGER
exec gnome-session &

Is there something different for GNOME2 desktop. Should I use another command like exec gnome-session2 &

Also I want to be able to view the client session and not a new session. In other words be able to see what the client is talking about when he complains of a problem.
