Hi,
hmm, where did you get that samba4 package from? Looks like the postinstall script could be somewhat broken (or perhaps of poor quality).
First it seems to barf because it doesn't like the syntax in the smb.conf file and then it has a cry because it looks like /usr/share/samba/setoption.pl is not executable.

Your standard dpkg:
sudo apt-get install samba4
Nothing special.
How can I clean all of this up? (I know purge, clean, etc. but just want to know the best way to deal with this)

I can't guess what is in your sources.list so please be more specific. Eg the output of
Code:
apt-cache policy samba4

Just remove it, eg.
Code:
apt-get remove --purge samba4
and make sure your package manager is in a "happy" state. Eg confirm
returns nothing.

The main problem you've got is that its an Alpha status (ie definitely NOT to be used for prod or even test unless you like sending bug reports to Samba team).

Note that the official RELEASE version of Samba 4.0 just came out (Dec 11 2012), but its likely not in Ubuntu's repos just yet.
