Smile getconf issue

Hi

what is the use of getconf command.

my aim is to find bit level of OS.

When i tried like getconf LONG_BIT , it is giving 32 bit.
But when i use "file /sbin/init" it is giving 64 bit. actually that box is 64 bit only..

can i get all OS info from getconf command with the bit value of OS. are the any System operands for getconf command.

please help me on this.

Thanks
