GDM, XWindows hangup issue

Hi and thanks for the great support site!

Im running fedora core 2 on a dell inspiron laptop. Everything worked great until I installed enlightenment.

Now, everything boots correctly, but the graphical login (GDM) no longer comes up. The "command prompt" login appears, then disappears repeatedly.
A quick look at "top" shows X starting up and shutting down repeatedly, and gdm-binary spawning multiple times....

With X restarting over and over, my command prompt interface hangs repeatedly and is almost useless except for simple tasks, and the "rescue disk" wont allow me to view the /var/log directory fir error messages.

how can I fix this apparent x-windows issue without a full reinstall? Maybe get a consistent command line?

thanks in advance

1.- try to write init 3
else
2.-
/etc/inittab

# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#
id:5:initdefault:
......

use recue disk, change it for 3 (or 1) and reboot
to try X, use init 5.

Ok thank you for your answer to a question (I should have known better)

Now that I have terminal access. I decided to peruse /var/log.

Nothing suspect appears under X.org logfiles, HOWEVER:

/var/log/gdm/:0.log.4 states

"
Could not init font path element unix:7100, removing from list!
Fatal server error:
Could not open default font 'fixed'
"

Under an educated guess, I looked inside my /etc/X11/xorg.conf .

sure enough, the FontPath is set to unix/:7100.

now is this normal for the xorg.conf... shouldnt it point to something like

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts or something?

it seems strange that the font path would be changed huh?
(not changing anything until I get advice from someone more knowledgeable)

Interesting Enough...

OK so maybe I toyed with this a little...

I commented out the line in my Xorg.config file declaring the font path.
Now everything seems to be back to normal... but did I really do the right thing?
I cant help but wonder if there is a more correct way to do this than simply commenting a line

Mine:

Section "Files"
FontPath "unix/:7100" # local font server
# if the local font server has problems, we can fall back on these
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic"
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttf"
EndSection
