ftp install -what does it mean to "enable anonymous download edit"

I was reading the Ubuntu user guide for vsftp server installation and wondered what that phrase meant. I googled it and found many references to the option, but no explanation as to what it meant.

Perhaps this is a question for the Newbe forum, but thanks in advance for your help.

Anonymous FTP Configuration

By default vsftpd is not configured to allow anonymous download. If you wish to enable anonymous download edit /etc/vsftpd.conf by changing:

anonymous_enable=Yes

Without changing the default ( disallow anonymous download ), The user must provide username/password.

The above setting allows anyone and everyone to download files without then need for login credentials.
