For people how want to play WMA files without converting MP3 files

i'm using XINE as a video player. first of all , i was having a problem playing WMV files. i installed win32 codec from Mplayer web site , a package called ein32_essintial , and modified the XINE config file to point at the location of the codecs ..... after that XINE was able to read both WMV and WMA very smothly and without problems at all .... you might facea problem with windows media player version 10 files but i don't think that it is a big deal ... for qustions email me at : wwael.altaqi@gmail.com

XINE refuse to be built with gcc4.0 how can I install xine
on a FC4 machine?????.

waelaltaqi, where did you install the codec, and how did you modify the config file? Will this then work as a plugin for firefox?

This is a forum, a place where you post questions and get answers so others can benefit from it aswell. If you think you found a solution to a problem, write a howto and post it in the right place. Don't use email, messengers or whatever, There are other places for that.

if you go to mplayer official web site , there is an essintial package for windows codecs.i prefer to read the FAQ page in XINE web site. after installing the codecs you should modify the xine config file. this file should be located in a hidden folder inside your home folder. on my comuter the folder is : /home/wael/.xine . you open the file with your text editor , you should see a section called : path to win32 codec. you should modify that line to make it point to the codec you downloaded. if you need more help ... i'm here.

You didn't answer me, how to install XINE on FC4 though it cannot be compiled by gcc4.0???????????????

i didn't install XINE from source , i installed as a package which is available on rpmfind.net or sourceforg.net and many other web site. anyway if you don't use your current version of GCC , you can take it out and try to install the version required by XINE. the version you need to compile XINE with should be listed in the FAQ page in XINE web site. i had the same problem with mplayer which requires an older version of GCC. But to be honest with you , i don't know if that might effect other stuff or not. and i don't know if you can install two versions GCC or not on the same linux box. i think you should try to install XINE via rpm , i guess this is the easiest way to do it. try this link

RPM find is just lead you to freshrpms.net site, so I downloaded it from the freshrpms.net.
Here is the problem when I tried to installed xine-lib-1.1.0-1.2.fc4.i386.rpm

For the file xine-0.99.4-1.2.fc4.i386.rpm
the error is:

How to overcome?

XINE depends on those libraries in order to work well. you need to install those libraries before you rpm the package. even if you compiled the source , it will not worl fine after that and probab;y it will not compile at all. go to www.rpmfind.net or rpm.pbone.net and search for each of libXvMCW.so.1 , libaa.so.1 , libdvdcss , libfame-0.9.so.1. i found those libarries before as RPMs , so you don't need to compile nothing i guess. you just have to be patient untille you find them all. you will need those libraries for many other multimedia prgrams anyway. keep working on it and if you need anything i will try to help. thanks

Kind of off topic but my girlfriend is from Providence, KY which is like right next to Madisonville, I'm originally from Salyersville, e-mail me if you don't mind at "marcusdean.adams@gmail.com". I would e-mail you but I keep getting a failed delivery when I try to e-mail you at "wwael.altaqi@gmail.com".

What I did to get my media files playing fine including all .wmv files, .avi files, .wma files and everything was go here and install all of those packages, then run "win32-codecs" and "libdvdcss" and now I have no problems playing anything. However those win32 codecs only work for mplayer and kaffeine(the libdvdcss allows dvd playback and works universally), if you want to use xine's natural win32 libraries after installing those urpmi packages run "xine-win32" and those install the win32 libraries for xine, this is all assuming that you use mandriva, fedora or another distro that supports .rpm packages.

download the package then do the following :

where $/location is the location where you downloaded the rpm for.

search on that web site for other libabries ....

I have know about the method which let rpm to download the file automatically.
But I am using dial-up connection.
Each second cost alot.
I don't have enough money to sit and wait to see all the file download.
I want to find an all-in-one package so that I can go to a internet cafe to download it and install it at home.

it's kind of hard to install all of them over a dailup connection. when i sent you that page i didn't mean that you have to install all links on the web page. you have to intsall the package which meets your distro..for example , if you are using Fedora core 3 , you have to search for the rpm which meets that. i addition , i don;t think that installing these packages will not take a long time if you were able to pick the right ones. they will take 15 minutes maximum... hope that will help
