I am pretty sure you need to put the correct codecs in that directory before you compile it. That is how it reads in the mplayer "README" file.

This is very frustrating as an mplayer user. I put all the codecs there, but what...IT DOESN'T COMPILE THE WIN32 codecs! AGH!!! Followed the instructions...but gah, it still won't play wmv properly.

I don't get it. WMV9 is such a fundamental codec, like mp3 in music players. Why can't they make it come with default, COMPILE by default, and install the proper wmv and win32 codecs by default? Or some sort of "full functionality / install everything" option? I'm not asking for a wizard here, just some simple things I can issue from the commandline without having to fetch EXTERNAL packages. IT should all come within the source, no, and not "visit the site to download the codecs you want"...again, especailly since this codec so fundamental.

Why do they torture us with "check the configure log to see if your wanted components are included"?!!!: And make arrogant decisions and don't even ask us, and "autodetect" everything and assume everything we would want is there?
