Firefox won't run, suse 9.3

This is a basically new Suse 9.3 installation. Firefox did work the first couple of times I tried it without any problems. Then, it would start up but going to any page or trying to maximize the window would cause it to quit out. Now, it won't run at all, click on the program, tries to load, times out. Tried reinstalling from mozilla.org, first time didn't work, thought maybe I needed to run the installer as root, did so and it worked, but wouldn't work when not logged in as root. Tried removing/reinstalling using Yast and didn't seem to make any difference.

It will still actually run normally if you run it as root for some reason...

If you don't have great bookmarks, try to deleat /home/"you"/.mozilla and restart Firefox. Then all properties are set back.

Where did you get the first Installer from?
Was it a RPM file?

Then you said that you reinstalled it from Mozilla.org (This means that you have used the tar.gz setup)

Please clear these things.

I had the exact same problem, distro and all. I think it was a faulty rpm I might have got from ftp.gwdg.de. Deleting .mozilla in my user's home directory fixed the problem. Thank you.

I am having the same problem with both Mozilla and Firefox. Both run just fine as root, but won't open up as a regular user. I deleted .mozilla but it didn't work.

If I try to run it from the command window this is what I get:
/home/"me"/.gtk_qt_engine_rc:71: error: unexpected character '{', expected character '}'

(Gecko:12762): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed /usr/bin/firefox: line 254: 12762 Segmentation fault
$MOZ_PROGRAM $MOZ_LANG

Konqueror works just fine. I deleted and reinstalled mozilla using Yast, and just installed firefox 1.0.7 from .tar.gz

Not quite sure about it, but copying the root's /.mozilla directory into yours might help.

I will have to check the paths and all that to make sure it is correct. But I don't think there would be major problems.

Also don't forgot to change the permissions of that directory, when you copy the folder as root, into your Home directory.

I tried it twice, and made sure to change the permissions, but it still isn't working. Mozilla opened once, but never a second time.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help

Watch out for mixing 32bit and 64bit plugins (if you have any.)

yast's version of Mozilla/Firefox should work fine.

Again try nuking all configuration files for firefox/mozilla/plugins (just to be on the safe side).

I deleted .mozilla again, then logged in as root and copied the root folder's .mozilla into my home. It still only runs as root.

I'm currently runnin yast's version of mozilla. Last time I deleted .mozilla and then was able to open mozilla off my taskbar (not as root), but when I tried to enter a url it crashed.

If I have a mozilla window open as root, then I can open a mozilla window from my taskbar. If I close out the root mozilla window and then try and open mozilla it doesn't work. This doesn't work with firefox however.

I think you shouldn't copy root's .mozilla dir. Try to start Firefox without any .mozilla dir, it will be created at the first start.

i had the exact same problem with firefox, mozilla and beagle(which wouldn't start) and another program that I don't remember right now. All of them gave me the error segmentation fault, what I did was kinda lame but worked.
I backed up all my documents from my home folder not the apllications hidden folders.
Created a new user with the exact priviledges as i was using the one before and it worked.

That's maybe the same as deleting all necessary hidden folders and restarting the app...
For me such problems occur sometimes when i update a programm or something strange was written to the configs.

Has the user (the one with the original problem) tried to delete the .mozilla folder from his Home folder?

If not, then that is the first thing to be tried out.

Other solutions maybe later thought upon.

Thank you all for the help!

I ended up creating a new user, and now it seems to be working just fine.

I tried the same thing then a few days later started having the same problem with the new user.It was all after a yast upgrade. It seems to be java related because it only happened when trying to load web pages with java script. Also azureus would not work also which is a java app.Still looking for an answer will post back if I come across anything
