I just installed x64 CentOS 5.4. The Firefox that's installed is something like version 3.0.18, current version is 3.6.something. I tried downloading the new version from their site, but when I open the "new" untarred files, it's still v3.0. How do I update to the newest version? Help > Check for Updates just says that FF is up to date.
Distribution: PCLinuxOS2023 Fedora38 + 50+ other Linux OS, for test only.

Firefox 3.0.18 was released about 40 days ago.
3.0.xx is also the stable one on CentOS 5.4 .
I have tried using 3.5.x : There were some issues,
not quite stable.
CentOS 5.4 is not really about having the latest software,
but about stability and being rock solid.
Almost all the installed programs are 2006 versions,
but with the latest security updates.
If you want all installed packages to be the latest
versions, Fedora 12 is the choice.
.....
It doesn't matter that the version seems old.
The point is that Fedora or Centos apply any recent patches to their versions without updating the version number to the same as the mozilla version.
So the recent security scare has in fact been covered even though neither Centos or Fedora are offering Firefox 3.6.2
Fedora 12 is on Firefox 3.5.9-1 still.

Help!!!
Inside the folder you untarred, there is an executable file called Firefox. Just double-click on it to launch the new Firefox. You can put a shortcut on your desktop if you like. It will not replace FF3.0 that was installed through your package manager; you will have both versions side by side.
CentOS is a terrible choice if you want to have the latest applications. It is all about older applications that are thoroughly tested and known to be stable. (That being said, I personally have FF3.6 running in CentOS 5.4 using the method I described above. )
