It seems it is the flash plugin that's killing the browser, but I like the ability to use flash, so how can I keep flash and keep firefox from crashing?

The flashblock extension works fairly well. It keeps flash from loading unless you click on an icon it displays in place of the flash content. It can't stop you from crashing once you click on the icon, but it will cut down on the number of crashes from ads and whatnot.
