after multiple failed attempts with Truecrypt I'd like to find a file encryption system available for Debian. Not a filesystem encryption tool, just basic files. I'd like to encrypt my external HD and then I would like to use rsync to save.
When I installed Debian, i encrypted (it was offered in the process) my file system and /home. That works fine.
I'd like to find a file encryption system available for Debian.
With you so far...

You lost me. You want to encrypt each file on your external hard drive separately? Or you want to encrypt your external entire hard drive in one shot somehow..? (But without using filesystem encryption?)
Maybe I got myself misunderstood by using terms inappropriately; by "filesystem" I meant \root files. I'll use plain terms:
I want to save a directory (say "/home/DIR"), and all it's subdirectories, to a external HD. I want these files to be encrypted on this HD so I, only, can read them with the appropriate "key". Then, additionally, once I mount the HD, I'd like to rsync "/home/DIR" to the HD so it doesn't take hours each time to save the directory.
I'll have a look at ccrypt ASAP; then back to you. Cheers,
