Extend LVM partition

I want to extend my LVM partition with some free space that is just before it on the drive..

I am aware this takes four steps:

1. Extend underlying LVM partition
2. Extend VolGroup00
3. Extend LogVol00
4. Extend ext3 filesystem

But how to do each of these steps I don't know.

If i simply delete the partition then remake one the right size (for step 1) then the beginning of the partition will be in the wrong place (which will cause problems wont it?)

There is a section on LVM. It doesn't seem to work all the time and haven't figured this out yet.

I cant be responsible if you mess up your system. At least the commands are there for your reference.

I think you need to :

create a physical volume on that free partition with pvcreate
extend your lvm group with vgextend
extend your logical volume with lvextend
resize your fs

To extend a LVM partition for Eg. say /usr

follow the below given steps

boot the system using a live cd

umount/mnt/lvm/localvg-usrlv
lvextend --size +2G -n /dev/localvg/usrlv
e2fsck -f /dev/localvg/usrlv
resize2fs /dev/localvg/usrlv
e2fsck -f /dev/localvg/usrlv

and it is done.

Your problem--extend LVM partition also can be realized by the Extend Partition Assistant Professional Edition, I promise. This can really help you finish the work that you want to do flawlessly. I used to extend partition through it. The users all spoke highly of it. You can have a try ignore the complex procedures you lined.

Hi rconan,

If your volume gorup has free space then simply you can run lvextend.

if your volume-gorup has no space and you have free space on you HDD then you can follow steps suggested by cmisip.

The forum is for linux and open source and OP want to extend LVM in linux.

Link provide by you is for windwos. So it related to LVM.

I had the same problem you did, but under the help of Partition Assistant I overcome the problem.
