Evolution won't open a new mailbox folder

If I create a new folder called "foo" under my inbox, then have email delivered into that folder (via Dovecot, the local IMAP server), it works fine. The problem is if that folder gets created before the user of Evolution creates it, then it doesn't work. Evolution gets an error when trying to create the folder, but won't create a local reference to it, and thus the existing folder is not accessible.
