Evolution cannot connect to Gmail POP or SMTP

Hi! I'm using an old version of Fedora and hoping to get some help to get me through the next three weeks!

I'm on Fedora 17 which is really old (I know) but I am just about to buy a brand new machine and want to put off upgrading for just three more weeks. I've waited too long to buy the new machine because I've been traveling internationally and delivery is a problem. All that said ....

Yesterday Evolution stopped connecting to my Gmail account. I've used Evolution and Gmail for years and as recently as yesterday afternoon. Late last evening I couldn't connect and this morning I have confirmed it's not a transient problem. All attempts to use Evolution return errors "Could not connect to smtp.gmail.com: Input/output error" and "Could not connect to pop.gmail.com: Input/output error".

I've checked and rechecked (and rechecked) port settings and Gmail configurations. I have also double checked my firewall settings. The important point to focus on is that it worked fine at one point yesterday then about five hours later will not work at all.

Inside of Evolution's Mail Preferences > Account Editor when I try the button "Check for Supported Types" I get an immediate failure (both POP and SMTP). If I change to unencrypted I don't get an immediate error but of course Google won't support that so eventually I get a time out error. In the past I've found that the "Check for Supported Types" button is a good way to determine if Evolution is actually communicating with the POP server (or SMTP server). Well, it is not.

Spent about an hour digging for help on this. (Most pages talk about double checking your Gmail account settings and Evolution settings. Already done all that.) Along the way I came upon the notion that I may be looking at an expired SSL certificate problem. Come to think of it, midnight GMT did elapse between the time it worked and the time it didn't work.

I can't find anything in my system or any help online to pursue this further. Any ideas? I did find Chrome's certificate files and there is one from Google that expired in March 2014 ... but that can't be related since this all worked yesterday.

Help! I'm stuck and pretty well hampered without having any incoming or outgoing e-mail.

I dont know how to fix that issue, but might I suggest using the web browser to check your email for the next 3 weeks. Then you could worry about setting up new on the new computer.

Transient Situation Cleared

This is a follow up to let everyone know that, after a four day hiatus, Evolution is now communicating again with Google e-mail, both SMTP and POP. Perhaps it was some sort of transient situation at Google.

I've seen a couple of complaints about this, all with Evolution. No other clients or webpages seem to have been affected, just Evolution. One person could access GMail through multiple means, but not Evolution. It seems to be back up for everyone.
