Question error installing libc6: cant overwrite devpts

$uname -a
Linux mishkin 2.6.4 #1 Tue Apr 6 22:01:50 CEST 2004 i686 GNU/Linux

im using debian sarge and if i try to
$apt-get install libc6

i get

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.3.2.ds1-11_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/etc/default/devpts', which is also in package initscripts

if i then run
$dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/libc6_2.3.2.ds1-11_i386.deb
Unpacking replacement libc6 ...
dpkg-deb (subprocess): short read in buffer_copy (failed to write to pipe in copy)
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste returned error exit status 2
dpkg: error processing /usr/local/src/libc6_2.3.2.ds1-11_i386.deb (--install):
short read in buffer_copy (backend dpkg-deb during `./lib/libc-2.3.2.so')

I havent been able to find a solution to either of these and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Run 'tzconfig' if you wish to change it.

and it installed fine. Was this a bad idea to overwrite devpts and tmpfs? Any forseeable complications?
